Right sleeve - Inverted 3 gold chevrons denotes rank of Sargent
note:the gold has since faded  
 

Right sleeve - Inverted single gold chevron denotes a single time wounded (or in this case gassed) during active duty
 
 

Left sleeve - Inverted single red chevron denotes WCMsr was honorably dischared.
This means WCMsr is no longer active in the military and cannot give orders to other soldiers.  
 

Left sleeve - 3 gold chevrons denotes he was in the service during WWI between 18 and 23 months
1 gold chevron - 6 to 11 months
2 gold chevrons - 12 to 17 months
3 gold chevrons - 18 to 23 months
4 gold chevrons - 24 to 29 months (very rare)
5 gold chevrons - 30 to 35 months (usually meaning they served in occupied France or Germany)  
 
Patches were normally made locally thus had minor deviations of color and size.
